Imagine that all the coastal areas in the world were completely submerged in water and the national parks and rangelands of the world were nothing but barren disasters. This scenario will become a reality if global warming continues to occur. Ecosystems will be severely damaged due to the change in weather it causes. Studies show that the change in weather can also spread contagious diseases that are carried by mosquitoes and other virus carrying animal that dwell in warm areas. The cause of this? The rising amount of heat trapping air pollutants, more specifically, carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and methane. If the effects of global warming continue it will prove to be disastrous. Global warming is a fairly newly discovered problem, considering it will take decades to accurately measure the effects of it. Over the last century the average land surface temperature has risen .8-1.0?F. The cause of global warming is known as the "Greenhouse Effect". The greenhouse effect is when the air pollutants prevent the suns energy from escaping back into outer space, thus creating the greenhouse effect. Each year people put six billion tons of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into the air. 32 percent of carbon dioxide comes from cars and other forms of transportation. Carbon dioxide doubled the beginning of the pre-industrial revolution era to the end of the 21st century. The International panel on climate change has concluded that the surge in greenhouse gases will cause the fastest rate of warming to occur in the past 10,000 years. Other organizations have predicted that the level of arid deserts will increase and the amount of forests will decrease dramatically over the next 100 years. One less prominent but more threatening type of gas are the chlorofluorocarbons. They cause the ozone layer that shields the earth from the harmful rays of the sun to become thinner. Damage to the ozone layer has been so great that a hole in the ozone appears over the Antarctic each year. Chlorofluorocarbons are also believed to have a part in global warming. Recent studies have shown that there is likely to be an overall trend towards increased precipitation, evaporation, more intense rainstorms and drier soils. Changing regional climate could alter forests crop yields and water supplies (epa.gov). It will also threaten human health and harm many types of ecosystems. Diseases carried by mosquitoes may also spread with the increase in temperature. If it should spread into a highly populated area it will challenge the area's government's ability to contain and control these diseases. It is projected that the greenhouse effect will cause sea level due to melting glaciers and the expansion of the ocean water. Sea Level Has risen world wide approximately 15-20 cm in the last century (epa.gov). 2-5 cm of it is caused by the melting of glaciers, and 2-7 cm of it is caused by the expansion of ocean waters, due to the rise in temperature. Communities that border coastal areas would have to move their homes or spend millions of dollars each year to hold back the ocean. (See last two pages for rise progression.) As heat trapping gases accumulates over the years, the temperature will increase at a faster rate. By the year 2200 a hot day in California will be considered to be around 110?F. If this happens, most forests in the U.S. will be completely non-existent, and deserts will cover most of the earth. As previously mentioned the temperature has risen by .8-1.0?F over the last century. The surface temperature of the ocean has also been rising at a similar rate (Marshall.org/guide.htm). Nighttime low temperatures are rising twice as fast as daytime highs. Winters in areas between 50? and 70? north latitude are also warming quickly, while summer shows little trend. These extremely accurate temperatures are taken from several orbiting satellites. Temperatures taken from ground stations are much less accurate. There are also other variables in the temperature like the cycles in which the earth gets closer or farther away from the sun, affecting the temperature and intensity of the heat. Another variable in determining the effects of global are aerosols in the air that have a cooling effect on the sun's heat. During the 20th century precipitation increased about 0.5 to 1 percent per decade of most of the middle and high latitude continents (global warming.org). Precipitation in sub tropical areas have decreased 0.3 percent per decade, while there are no significant changes in the tropics. Precipitation in North America has increased by 5-10 percent . While in Canada it has risen 10-15 percent. Rainfall is also coming down in more concentrated and heavy downpours. In the early 20th century only 9 percent of the U.S. experienced more than 2 in" of rain within 24 hours. Recently the percent has increased to 11 percent. Before the industrial revolution, human activity released very few gases into the atmosphere, but now through population growth, fossil fuel burning, and deforestation, humans are affecting the mixture of gas in the atmosphere (ncdc.noaa.gov). 82% of the emissions are from burning fossil fuels alone. The remaining amount is caused by landfills, gas pipelines, livestock, and coal. In the U.S., 6.6 tons of greenhouse gases are emitted per person every year. Since the industrial, carbon dioxide concentrations have risen by 30%, and methane concentrations have almost tripled. Transportation accounts for 32% of all the carbon dioxide Americas pump into the atmosphere (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency). The main problem is the amount of heat trapping gases released into the air. It seems like a simple problem, the solution, just limit the amount of air pollution. Its far more complex than that. In doing so would prove to be a social and economical disaster for obvious reasons. Since this isn't a rational solution, we need to improve the efficiency of cars, power plants, and use of electricity. Little is being done in the U.S. to limit the amount of gases released into the air. Particle solutions have been made to slow down global warming but not to stop it. To prevent global warming you can by ENERGY STAR(R) products, or other products that use electricity efficiently, plant trees, and by buying a fuel efficient car. Although global warming will not effect us for several more decades, it will be a problem for future generations of people and animals. If immediate action is not taken the earth will turn into a gigantic wasteland until the next ice age. Europe has already taken a step toward limiting carbon dioxide, hopefully other countries will follow. Think about the future and look for ways you can help.
